Practical Theology across the Pond
APT members may be interested to note a number of recent and upcoming programs connected to BIAPT (the British and Irish Association for Practical Theology).
On April 12, Leeds Trinity University and BIAPT’s Missiology group sponsored a daylong session, “Whose Reading is Right? Conflicts of Interpretation in World Christianity.” The focus was Joshua Broggi’s recent text, Diversity in the Structure of Christian Reasoning (Brill 2015), in which Scriptural reading practices from central Africa and southern India “reconfigure” the hermeneutical models developed by Heidegger and Gadamer.
On June 20 (Manchester) and 24 (London), BIAPT and the Centre for the Study of Christianity and Sexuality will sponsor “Constructive Conversations: Workshops for Theological Educators on Classroom Strategies around Gender and Sexuality.” The goal is to “map the field” of current practices, to find a shared language around sexualities and gender, and to introduce theological educators to specific strategies including embodied reflection and multiple models of theological reflection.
On July 12-14 (Limerick, Ireland) BIAPT will host its 2016 Conference: Wrestling with Angels? Practical Theology as Spiritual Practice, with keynotes by Donal Dorr (missionary priest, activist, and writer on pneumatology); Nicola Slee (poet and feminist theologian); and Fáinche Ryan (scholar of sacramental theology and ecclesiology).
BIAPT extends its greetings to our friends in the APT; we welcome your interest – and even your attendance – at any of our events; and we wish you well in your work and endeavors!
